Program Note
Claire Denis, won both the Silver Bear for Best Director at Berlin and the Palme d′Or at Cannes this year for Both Sides of the Blade, her remarkable new feature. Denis worked with novelist Christine Angot in her adaptation of this story about the unusual relationship that develops between a couple who have lived together for nine years, when a man who broke up with the woman ten years ago suddenly reappears. What might have been a mere love triangle becomes infinitely more complex in Denis’s film as she endeavors to express feelings and situations that might otherwise seem impossible to depict. Love soon gives way to jealousy, anxiety, and doubt—feelings that are not solved merely by the words "I love you." Finally, when an indelible wound is inflicted on their relationship, the lover becomes an enemy. Love ends with the realization that everyone has two faces: one, an angel, the other, a devil. Both Sides of the Blade was shot during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and seems to reflect that the unstable psychological and physical conditions of society at that time. (LEE Yong Cheol)
