Program Note
Yiu-fai and and Po-wing, who comes to Buenos Aires from Hong Kong in 1995, have an on-and-off relationship. They love and long for each other one moment, but they are unable to stand each other the next; they’re afraid that their love might change, then they fear that this relationship will continue. Wong Kar Wai’s eternal personas Tony Leung and Leslie Chung embody Yiu- fai and Po-wing and play out their heartbreaking story: Their hearts diverge, their gazes miss, and time passes fleetingly. The film takes us to the “end of the world” where sad memories can be buried, but it does not stop there. In 1997, when Yiu-fai returns alone to Hong Kong but has a layover in Taipei, thinking of the person who will remind himself of the word “longing,” we know, that this is the beginning, again.
