Program Note
Hong Kong in 1962. Chow Mo-wan, a journalist, and Su Li-zhen, a secretary for a shipping company, move into adjoining apartments. Their spouses are often away on business trips, and the two sense each other’s loneliness through chance encounters in the halls, on the streets, and an outdoor noodle stall. The delicate and beautiful ensemble of Tony Leung, who won Best Actor at Cannes for his acclaimed portrayal of Chow and Maggie Cheung, who gives an incredible performance, combined with the resplendent music of Umebayashi Shigeru, the delicate cinematography of Christopher Doyle, and Wong Kar Wai’s unique style etches unforgettable cinematic moments in our hearts. In the Mood for Love was the closing film for the 5th Busan International Film Festival in 2000. (PARK Sun Young)
