Program Note
Rebecca Zlotowski’s latest feature a scene in which students in a classroom are watching Roger Vadim′s film, Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1959). The theme of the film and the novel on which it is based is deception: Characters are, at their core, radically different than the faces they show in public. At one point, Valmont, one of the film’s two cynical leads remarks coldly, “In love, we only seek pleasure.” In her new feature, Rebecca Zlotowski focuses on women who are, like Valmont and his partner, faithful to their desires. Problems arise though when others prevent them from realizing their desires. From whence and how does the betrayal of desire arise? Rachel (Virginie Efira) falls in love with Ali, whom she meets by chance one day. Rachel wants to have a baby, but the possibility hasn’t happened. She feels a deep bond with Leila, Ali’s daughter. Her growing desire for motherhood and the circumstances that unfold around her make Rachel increasingly impatient. She understands that her age may soon prevent her from realizing her desire to have a child. Although the tone of the film is quite different from most contemporary women’s films, the director′s decision to delve into the theme of modern women′s desires and freedom seems rather classic.
