Program Note
Yoko is a novelist who has gained fame for her work covering the Great East Japan Earthquake, but now she is unable to write a novel. Her husband is an aspiring director who creates stop-motion animation but has never been recognized for his work, and Yoko is responsible for the family’s livelihood. When Yoko takes a job at a nursing home, she witnesses elderly and disabled residents whose dignity is threatened. In this place where everyone wants to turn away and hide, she experiences shocking things. Based on a real-life tragedy at a nursing home in Japan, The Moon is a movie that directly questions the dichotomy of normal and abnormal, or superior and inferior human beings. It’s easy to turn a blind eye to this as someone else’s problem, but the movie reminds us that it’s something we all have to deal with. The movie stars Miyazawa Rie as Yoko and Odagiri Joe as Yoko’s husband, and Miyazawa Rie’s performance is particularly impressive. (NAM Dong-chul)
