Program Note
A road movie where two men and a woman of different nationalities meet and come to a realization, set against the backdrop of the Grand Canyon. Touring the deserts of US, Japanese Teppei accidentally encounters Ali, from Pakistan, who came to US to find his wife. Soon after, they are accompanied by the American Sarah, who′s traveling alone. On their way to the Grand Canyon, these three people of disparate personalities engage in conversations at times, and fall out at others. Ali wants to go back to Pakistan with his wife, but it′s hard to persuade her to do so. As it nears the time to go home, Ali gets nervous while Teppei and Sarah are in discord with each other. The law against terrorism dubbed the Patriot Act and an unpleasant encounter with Americans who look at these two men of color suspiciously hang over the travelers. As such, Big River records how personal trips meet with politics, and the wall that exists between races in the US, and how the era has arrived where people′s understanding of each other are being put on scales. As implied by the director in the title, the US in the film is a big river, where people come in crowds. Simultaneously, as shown through the journey of the three people lost in the desert, it is a place for people who are finding their own places after 9/11. Therefore, when the Teppei hesitates and can′t make clear his feelings for Sarah, it could be Japan′s confirmation of coordinates that is full of implications.(Kwon Yong-min)
