Program Note
A man longs to have his own child. The first child died at birth, and the second child did not only de at birth, but also made his mother die, too. A devout believer of God, he keeps asking God why he has to go through such tragedies, but as always, God never answers his questions. Set in a mythica and primitive space, the film′s atmosphere is dominated by anxiety and madness. The dynamic camerawork, the extreme camera angles and editing, the icy blue tone soaking the entire film, and distorted images-all these cinematic elements, added to the man′s narration, visualize the mind of a psychotic murderer who believes that God′s reason for taking his children is that all the children in the world have to be killed to be sent to heaven. Rather than posing the religious question if a believer must be willing to suffer from tragedies according to God′s will, the director intends to visualize a man who has turned into a monster after losing everything he had in life. Taking a further step from his previous works such as So Far Distance which adopted the perspective of a camel being dragged to a slaughterhouse and Stranger and Native which followed the chase between visitors to the forest and natives who struggle to stop the intrusion, the intensely bizarre Writing on the Earth is yet another example that shows the director′s unique talent for portraying the dark innen world of men.
