Program Note
Gendun Choephel was one of the earliest of the 20th century′s great rebels. He was an outspoken critic of the establishment and authority, a free spirit and since the time he was active in the 1930s has become a symbol of long sought-after freedom. He was also a Tibetan monk. The usual associations of monks on the roof of the world with enlightened wisdom is cast aside in favor of a portrayal of old Tibet in a new light. Choephel′s fearless search for new experiences that could have liberated Tibet from its rigidity is illustrated by rare archival footage juxtaposed with images of modern Lhasa and its multi-lane highways and discos. Ultimately Angry Monk is a fascinating portrait of a country with a famously turbulent history, and in its current incarnation as a jumble of contradictions and innate multiplicity. The errant monk-the multi-faceted outsider in his own home-Choephel would be the very embodiment of what he was trying to change.
