Program Note
In the mountains of northern Thailand, Chiang Mai, there is a school for hill tribe children. The students are from different tribes and they speak different dialects. They neither attend school every morning nor go back home after class. The school is more like a community. The students and the teachers live together, growing their own crops, cooking their own meals and continuing their education far from their villages. Most of students are from small tribes which are geographically, economically, and culturally isolated. For them, this school is the last place where they finally have a chance to learn and dream of the better life. Innocence focuses on three main characters, and vividly depicts the scenes of real education. The mountain children gain not only knowledge but also how to carve out their lives with courage and power. And the greatest thing they ever learn is hope. As a reward for completing 9 years of school, the principal will take them to the water′s edge, their first experience of the outside of the mountain. Their journey isn′t just about seeing the ocean; it is an internal journey-from childhood to adulthood. While we live in the world, which is rich in materials but poor in soul, Innocence appeals to us for the possibility of another way of life. (Nam In-young)
