Program Note

The adventures of Circleen continue. Beginning with Circleen: City Mouse(1998) and continuing in Circleen: Mice and Romance (2000), animator Jannik Hastrup returns with Little Big Mouse. With Circleen heading to Turkey on a vacation, her friends Ingolf, Fredrik and Viktor decide to join her-and stow away on a ship going the same way. There they meet the fearless Ali, and encounter a mouse-hating captain, the onboard cat and the questionable cook. In addition to all that, it turns out that Ali has a secret about his identity. Hastrup′s award-winning Circleen films have won prizes at Berlin′s Kinderfilmfest, Stuttgart, and the Chicago International Children′s Film Festival among others. The films are something of a throwback to the days of animation before Pixar and CGI, and conjure up a sense of warm nostalgia in adults at the same time as thrilling children, and his work is quickly gaining renown outside of his native Scandinavia. One of Europe′s most successful animated filmmakers.

Director

Jannik Hastrup

Hastrup was born in Næstved, Denmark, and has been directing since 1959. He trained under Bent Barfod and Flemming Quist Møller, began making television films in 1967, and has made approximately 60 animations during his career. His animation filmography includes [Concerto Erotico] (with Møller, 1964), [Benny’s Bathtub] (with Møller, 1970), [Trællene] (1974), [Samson & Sally] (1984), [War of the Birds] (1990) as well as the Circleen adventures, of which [Little Big Mouse] is the most recent.
