Impulse disorder patient Icheon fantasizes about playing with his brother Yucheon in the hospital. But to those who don’t know about his fantasies, Icheon is just a strange boy. His mother struggles with paying the hospital bills, and barely gets by, receiving help from her husband’s friend. Director Jeon Kyuhwan is known for his challenging R-rated films, such as The Weight and From Seoul to Varanasi. This time, he comes back with a film for everyone. My Boy is centered on two stories: One is in Icheon’s fantasy world and the other is his mother’s real world of hardships in looking after a sick boy. What first moves the audience is the story of the mother. Though pressed for money, she can’t give up her son, and the hospital suggests that she donate an organ. She is angry at first, but can’t keep death away forever. Icheon is just as adamant in not giving up his brother. He takes his brother’s wheelchair and heads off somewhere. The film subtly connects the boy’s organ and wheelchair, and the moment of parting becomes a moment of life for someone else. (NAM Dong-chul)
