This typical romantic comedy succeeds thanks to the attractive and experienced performers. The rising starlet Karen Gillan plays the role of the young novelist Jane from Glasgow, whose first novel gets success with the help of Tom, a money-minded publisher who nevertheless remains somewhat likeable. Jane falls sick, experiencing severe difficulties while preparing a new work, after she reconciled with her distant dad, and begins a new relationship with a self-absorbed writer. Believing all this is happening simply because she is too happy, Tom employs radical methods to get her out of her writing slump. Gillan’s performance pushes this bright and smooth romantic-comedy forward. Jane’s capricious personality actually indicates her vulnerability, showing how easily her mindset is affected by the beliefs of others. Another pleasure offered by Not Another Happy Ending is its images of Glasgow, a busy and romantic place where various activities are carried out in a creative and soothing space.
