Program Note
"There existed the possibility of witnessing... a basic chapter in human experience and human life: the period of ruin and decay that comes before the definitive disappearance. The possibility of being able to show what things occur then, and record them as they happen." -Mercedes Álvarez In the Castilla region of Spain is a village that has stood for over 1,000 years. Aldealseñor is the birthplace of documentary filmmaker Álvarez. She was born there and left the village as a child. Only 14 people now remain in Aldealseñor and it′s on the verge of vanishing forever, like so many other rural communities around the world. In an attempt to recapture some of her earliest memories, Álvarez returns to the village and records the conversations, activities and lives of those remaining. At the same time as the community is disappearing, so is the vision of painter Pello Aznar, who is trying to complete a landscape inspired by Aldealseñor before he goes blind. Together, the artist and the village make a moving comment on the passage of time, loss, and memory.
