Program Note
An apartment operated by the Social Welfare Department of Switzerland has an elevator on the ground floor with a small laundry room beside it. The film narrates the story about those who wait for the elevator and visit the laundry. Klaudia, newly employed to clean the apartment block, takes charge. She schedules washing times and rosters days for the residents. A war of nerves and conflict over the washing schedule disturbs the power relationships of the tenants. What makes this film most interesting is the camera, located on the ground floor alley, and the behavior of the residents and Klaudia around the camera. The camera and its subjects watch and utilize each other. The mutual “familiarity” of the characters and the camera tosses a question about “observation” and “interference” in a documentary, and brings an insight on the boundaries between the two.
