In the early 1970s, along with the military government, the Korean film industry and the quality of films was at an all time low. At this time, Yoo Young-Kil was not the only one questioning filmmaking in Korea. Thus it was a great opportunity to work with pioneer director Ha Kil-Jong and this collaboration was a turning point for the cinematographer. Following the film The Flower Pot, Her Fidelity is a story of a war veteran′s revenge. A man returns from war after ten years, and upon hearing that his wife and daughter died after being raped by the village teacher, draws a knife on him. The village teacher is a corrupt dictator who brings suffering and misery to the villagers. The main character and his exploits metaphorically represents the actual Korean political climate of the 1970s. Director Ha′s critical view on politics and Yoo′s energized cinematography infuse the film with a powerful sense of rage and anger. It is not a mere coincidence that Ha Kil-Jong′s death and the start of Yoo Young-Kil′s career as a news cameraman occurred at around the same period. (Lee Yong-Kwan)
