Rika, a quiet and well-behaved 28-year-old English teacher leads a comfortable life with her boyfriend Kengo. That is, until out of the blue, he confesses his love for another and moves out. Her new roommate Hanako′s personality initially catches Rika off guard, but as the two women develop friendship, the enigmatic Hanako opens her heart to Rika. Based on the novel by Ekuni Kaori, a popular female writer, the film features a simple piano score, restrained cinematography and meticulously composed shots to elegantly portray a woman′s private sorrow, The film premiered at the 1998 Berlin Film Festival. Naoe Gozu
Born 1953 in Nagano prefecture. As a producer for TV Man Union, one of Japan’s largest television production companies, she became well-known for nurturing young talent, a reputation which would later extend to the world of film. After applying her producing skills to a 1992 theater production of The Miracle Worker, she produced her first film Maborosi (1995), the feature-length debut of director Koreeda Hirokazu. The film won a number of festival prizes, including the Osella d’Oro at the Venice International Film Festival. Falling Into The Evening, for which she also wrote the screenplay, is Gozu first film as a director. (Hayashi Kanako)
