Program Note
Rakhshan Bani-Eternad is not only the most acclaimed Iranian female filmmakers, but one of top directors of Iranian cinema. Her career began during the 1979 Revolution when her deep commitment to social issues led to her involvement in documentary cinema. Although Bani-Eternad′s first three features are comedies, they deal with the social issues of housing and immigration. The May Lady is Bani-Eternad′s most mature work and is innovative in its treatment of Iranian urban women and the problems of the new generation who came of age after the revolution. No Iranian film has ever directly approached the hot issues of women and youth as this film has. Also significant is that it is the first independent film of the new era after President Khatami′s rise to power. Produced and promoted totally in private sector, The May Lady is and an important film in may respects. (Mohammed Attebai)
Director

Rakhshan Bani-etemad
"My filmmaking career began in documentary. Even between feature films, I was involved in documentary filmmaking as it is a window to the realities of society. My scripts are necessarily based on real stories that are rooted in the people′s lives in my society. Nevertheless, the story lien always deprives me of pondering on the situation of human beings. I tried for a couple of years to write a script different in structure from previous ones; The May Lady was a response to my obsessions. It′s a portrayal of my land′s mothers, the story of their untold words and hidden and repressed loves. Some consider The May Lady to be my will. Who knows, perhaps it is..."
