Program Note
On the Beat is a subtly subversive portrayal of the Beijing city of the nineties, a desolate landscape of imposing skyscrapers sprouting out of stretches of improverished houses. Ning Ying likes to capture the collective with long shots, but when the camera enters into private space, faces become distinguishable - homes liberate individuals from their social oneness. Ironically though, home is also an accomplice of the state machine; it is here that parents help to mould their children into "befitting " parts of the society. In the last sequence where the policemen relentlessly beat the stray dog to death, the camera slowly pulls back, showing majestic ancient buildings in the background; human behaviour cannot be explained without reference to history and culture. Ning Ying
Born 1959 in Beijing. Entered the Beijing Film Academy in 1978. In 1982, she was admitted to the Centro Sperimentale de Cinematografia in Italy and was assistant director to Bernardo Bertulocci in the making of The Last Emperor. In 1991, she made her debut feature Someone Falls in Love With Me, followed by For Fun in 1992. On the Beat(1995) is her third feature. Although Ning Ying entered the Beijing Film Academy the same year as her fifth generation colleagues, her younger age and her Italian experience certainly gives her works a very different flavour and makes her a rather unique personality in the scene of modern Chinese cinema.
