Program Note
Set against the city landscape of Taipei, Chen jofei explores the fears and anxieties of a closet gay young writer. The "safe" world that the lives in is disrupted by the advances of a daring young man who refuses to compromise with the norms of the society. The grim blue of his apartment is an apt reflection of his psychological wasteland, a sharp contrast to the cozy "home" of his first time lover. Undoubtedly a film about "coming out," it is also about love and the disappointments of live, If the work suffers from a certain didacticism, it will easily be forgiven for its integrity and sensitivity. Director
Director
Chen Jofei
Born in 1966 in Taipel, a "second generation Taiwanese" in a family originating from Mainland China. She first studied film at the Chinese Cultural University in Taipei, and then furthered her studies at the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles where she graduated in 1995. Where is My Love, which she wrote, produced and directed, is her first feature. Compared to Mainland China and Hong Kong, there are very few women filmmakers in Taiwan. Chen Jofei is a newcomer and one of the few. (Wong Ain-Ling)
