Program Note
Waiting Alone is a seemingly common love story of young Chinese people in the modern world. Why does Director Dayyan Eng tell the same old love story? He wants to focus on the rapidly changing life style of Chinese youth and their view on life. Chen Wen, an aspiring writer, runs an antique shop with his friend. He happens to meet a girl named Liu Rong with whom he falls madly in love. After he makes friends with her, he does everything to win her heart. Although he is not successful in love, he has friends who care about him and help him. He matures through his painful love. Dayyan Eng features a love story that may be special to oneself, but common to others. Ideal love may only be fantasy. The process of understanding this simple fact is all about learning about life. He points out that after understanding reality, it is time to make a courageous choice. After the final credits roll, a surprise cameo takes the viewers once again to a fantasy world from the world of reality. Movies and life, after all, share a common characteristic: fun. (Kim Ji-seok)
