Program Note
Sunhi arrives at school to pick up a recommendation letter to study abroad. She doesn’t like the letter, and runs into an ex-boyfriend who wants to get back together. When she returns to school to ask for a better recommendation, she somehow gets mixed up with her professor, an ex-boyfriend and an older classmate. A typical Hong Sangsoo moment in the film is a conversation between a man and woman while drinking. Our Sunhi uses those moments to its benefit. The same script repeats
over and over with just a bit of a twist. It’s similar to Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, but not quite as formal. The Hong moments repeat quite naturally, and the Hong Sansoo universe is created through the couple. In a way, Sunhi is a femme fatale: When men meet her, they fall for her sexual appeal. Sunhi captivates the men in a way that is not usually emphasized in other films. The femme fatale in Sunhi is not the men’s downfall. She just trifles with them. (NAM Dong-chul)
