Program Note
Sisters Lale and Yasemin are on vacation in Turkey’s coast of the Aegean Sea. They are trying to reacquaint with each other after a long separate silence. But their pleasant holiday turns into a potential explosive when a certain man appears.
With a delicate directorial touch The Impeccables delivers an intense atmosphere between two women. In the beginning, there hovers an oppressed silence between these two completely different women. Their relationship is so obscured, it is even unclear if they are sisters. The ambiguity and the tension continue throughout the film and are amplified by the combination of the facial expressions of the characters and unique sound effects. The mise-en-scene shows the two women often estranged from each other by visual barriers. Just like the rusty drain pipes in their house waiting to inevitably burst at some point, they both slowly approach the moment when their hidden conflicts would explode. In the end, it is clearly said that blood is thicker than water. (RHEE Soue-won)
