Program Note
Middle aged Greek man Jorgos crosses a border and goes to Bulgaria to buy a baby. At a secluded mountain location, he waits for a pregnant woman to deliver a baby with her deaf and mute brother and a midwife. One stormy night, a baby comes into this world. The first feature by an emerging Bulgarian director impressively contrasts gloomy human beings with vigorous nature with controlled dialogue. Focused on the male character, it doesn’t provide much by way of explanation and maintains a mysterious atmosphere throughout the story. The first half is in obvious comparison with the last half as the former shows the monotonous daily life of the protagonist while the latter is full of the liveliness of nature. At the end, the rainy forest and starry night, refreshing and beautiful, overlap with a baby, emphasizing life on one side while amplifying human beings’ depressed emotions on the other side.
