As a follow-up to the pioneering animation The King of Pigs (2011), Yeon Sangho’s sophomore effort revolves around a town’s new church that is seducing worshippers with promises of miracles. When a violent man loses his family to the shady priest, he single-handedly fights back. As in The King of Pigs, Director Yeon uses an unlikely topic for the form, creating his own style of realistic animation. In this story, where one bad guy goes up against another bad guy, we must ask: Who is the better man? A father who is a drunk and a gambler, or a father who seems to care but is actually preying on his family? As in The King of Pigs where the victims become assailants in a violent Korean society, the bad guys also rule the Korean society in The Fake. There are no exceptions, and there is no compassion.
