Program Note
Tibetan artist Tenzing is one of the many people who left Tibet for political reasons. When his father dies still longing for his homeland, he decides to fulfill his father’s wishes by organizing a massive project to bring Tibet’s soil to others who are living in exile. So begins his journey to bring 20,000 kg of Tibetan earth to India. Tenzing’s journey is not easy. There aren’t many ways he can move the soil, as he does not know Tibet well. He can’t very well trust the people who promise to move the soil for him. Most of the work must be done over the phone in a hotel room, and he is more and more anxious as the date of the event approaches. But the soil does finally arrive in India, and he finds his smile again. This project to simply spread out Tibetan soil moves one to tears. Because we can feel the earnest hope that the Tibetans still hold on to, as they step on and hug their homeland soil. (CHO Young-jung)
