Program Note
Lee Jang-ho returns 18 years after Declaration of Genius (1995). Islamic rebels abduct a missionary group made up of a priest, a missionary, and an elder. The rebels demand their leader’s release, and with their lives in danger the members of the missionary group lose faith in each other. As a devout Christian, Lee preaches the Christian outlook through God’s Eye View but he does make an effort to accommodate the secular position. The film is inspired on actual events, but uses fictional characters and nations. When the missionary group is captured by the Islamic rebels they try, unsuccessfully, to hide the fact that they are Christians. The elder scolds his wife for praying too much, and she finally stands up to him, a man who has always looked down on women. The missionary leading the group is caught getting paid at the restaurant they ate at, leading the group to suspect that he is a fraud. When their lives are in danger, each person is exposed for who they are, and each must choose between life and faith. Martyrdom is the obvious choice until they are forced to watch others die for their faith. (NAM Dong-chul)
