Program Note
In today`s world, we react casually to death… Thanks to the media, people have gotten used to seeing corpses, and death has become cheap. I think this cheapening of death ought to create a sense of revulsion in people… So in my works I try to copy this problem, and draw attention to it. ? Ivan Vyrypayev In [Euphoria], playwright and first-time filmmaker Vyrypayev explores the brutal aspects of love and jealousy in a film that divided critics at the prestigious Kinotavr Film Festival for its harsh language and relentless violence. Vera and her lover Pakha run away from their small hometown on the Don River, and soon her husband, Valery, is pursuing them. En route to the inexorable conclusion, we realize none of the characters is equipped to deal with their emotions ? whether it is feelings of deflating loss or incredible joy ? that inability manifesting itself as violence.
