Program Note
So Yong Kim`s debut feature is an unflinchingly naturalistic and painfully realistic look at adolescent displacement, both physical and emotional. Aimie and her single mother are new arrivals to the west confronting the challenges and frustrations of life in a new country, in this case America. Aimie`s only friend is the equally isolated Tran, and when romantic and sexual feelings develop it only adds to Aimie`s loneliness. Shot in a Canadian winter, the film`s bleak aesthetic mirrors Aimie`s emotional space, aided by a low-key but expressive performance by Jiseon Kim. [In Between Days] touches upon universal themes of dislocation, the struggle to fit in to new environments and the desire to be loved that smacks of authenticity at every turn. In doing so, Kim transcends both the Korean and teenaged experience and crafts a film relevant to us all.
