Program Note
This film is the story of an ex-boxer who now runs an illegal dogfight ring while working for a loan shark, his girlfriend who dreams of becoming a singer, and a female ex-con-turned-cab driver whose number one worry is paying off her debts. The two women join forces to devise a plan for getting a load of fast cash, but men are constantly getting in their way. The storyline recalls the conventional cat-and-mouse chase between misfits and the crime world, and in this sense, the film seems no different from Hollywood films of the similar genre. But the film’s lengthy hard-boiled action scenes and its keen focus on masculinity and femininity gives it character. The director succeeds as a skillful storyteller as he weaves together the complex relationships and situations, and gives life and style to more than ten characters. The superb performance by long-awaited actress, Lee Hae-young, now in her forties, also serves as the film’s main attraction. It is the feature debut film of self-proclaimed B movie, action film buff, Ryu Seung-wan.
