Program Note
Hwang Jin Yi, an entertainer, is a famous figure in Korean history that has been reinterpreted through time and media as did Chun Hyang. This film adapts the story by a North Korean writer Hong Suk-jung. Nomi is a fictional Robin Hood like character added by the writer of original novel that brings new energy to the film. The usual legend of Hwang Jin Yi is described as an entertainer who mocked men of high birth but her romance with Nomi who condemns corrupted officials and dreams of new world adds new context as a love affair that transcends class and time. And through this romance, she is reborn as a woman who pursues revolution with the slaves and low classes. This film is almost significant that it is a period film that became a main stream genre and the level of production design achieved in Korean films. (LEE Sang-yong)
