Program Note
On an island in southern Iran, a boy named Motu lives with his mother and his aphasic sister. His father was lost at sea and his brother-in-law died the day after his wedding; ever since then Motu’s sister has not been able to speak. The boy supports his family by smuggling, and his intermediary is his one and only confidant. Motu waits for his father, searching for any kind of information that leads to him. He even decides to smuggle himself onto a boat to find his father but the plan couldn’t be materialized. The film ends with a saying that relates to the desire of islanders whose family members are lost at the sea: if one gives water to a dry tree, the wind will send his desire to the missing family. Director Ramtin Lavafipour crosses the desire of Motu and the wife of the intermediary (who doesn’t actually appear in the film) and it amplifies the conflict and frustration between them. Both eagerly desire to reunite with family members but it disappears like a sea breeze. (KIM Ji-Seok)
