Program Note
Confessional is a film that questions the borderline between truth and lies. However there is a surprising twist at the end. Ryan, who works as a video editing engineer, heads for Cebu island with his girlfriend Monet to participate in a documentary contest at the Sinulog Festival. While filming a documentary on the Sinulog Festival, Ryan meets and interviews the ex-mayor Lito, who has been linked with many crimes. Surprisingly, Lito begins to confess the crimes he had committed. Witnessing a crime scene guided by Lito, Ryan runs away in horror but comes back to face Lito. Lito offers advice to Ryan by saying, ‘if you want to become an excellent documentary film director, you must be a little smarter and also objective.’ Ryan comes to a certain realization. He then witnesses a real murder scene and films it on his camera. All of this is the truth. But at that moment, Ryan comes to think ‘he has caught a great scene’. Hence, the question arises, is there any meaning in separating truth from lies? Directors Jerrold Tarog and Ruel Dahis Antipuesto present a different story in the film from the one they have begun with, and this comes as a great shock to the audience. (KIM Ji-Seok)
