Program Note
Fu-gui decides to sell his organs to make money for his father’s operation. He took several examinations and sold his kidney but never got the promised money. He came home without money, without a kidney, and without his father, who had already passed away. The film shows how society treats a man through two shocking events: the trading of organs and the death of an old man. While the ‘trading’ goes on, a human body degenerates into a gobbet of meat which can be sold or calculated without dignity. The way people treat death also shows cruel reality. Instead of expressing sorrow or condolences, people only show obedience for bureaucratic procedures of the handling of a dead body. Maybe we are living in the Feast of Villains with human beings and their bodies consumed by the distribution of capitalism. (Mina OAK)
