The film is based on a true story of a father and son’s accidental crossing of the Pakistan-Indian border at a time of war and the wife/mother who waits for their return. The power of a true story is strong. The family is forced to live apart for many years because they are part of the ‘untouchable’ Dalit caste in Pakistan’s Hindu faith. But director Mehreen Jabbar especially glorifies the strong survival power of the wife/mother. Ramchand, a young boy who lives in Bhimra near the Pakistan- Indian border, accidentally goes over the border and gets arrested by Indian soldiers. His father Shankar goes in search for him and also gets caught. Despite the sudden disappearance of her husband and son, Champa defends her house and waits for her family. Jabbar sternly accuses the reality of human rights being trampled on and neglected by the government due to religion and social dlass. She claims that it is not just the war between India and Pakistan that kept them detained for so long. She further highlights Champa’s strong spirit as she pays off her husbands debts while waiting for her family’s return. The film not only makes a charge at society, it is also a family film with strong, intense drama. (KIM Ji-Seok)
