Program Note
From its beginning, Sell Out! does not appear to be a common film. The protagonist Rafflesia interviews the character of filmmaker Joon Han Yeo himself. The film, which unfolds with the interview of the naked filmmaker who comments that life is dull despite the fact that people are dying next to him, is full of mockery and satire. Even they babble on without taking a breath, and the scene of miscommunication with the management reminds the viewer of the theater of the absurd. The sarcasm toward the prevailing state of society, where imitation is emphasized over creativity and a set-up is understood as reality, is combined with a musical to present a cheerful and pleasant black comedy. Sell Out! is an Alice in Wonderland of modern mass media where all one has to do is sell out. (Mina OAK)
