Program Note
The Pineda family is living in an old theater located amongst chaotic side streets and endless dark stairs. The people coming to the humble theater, decorated with women’s nudes and a warning ‘not to evacuate’, are only engrossed in exposing, trading, and satisfying their natural urges since the darkness in the theater conceals their desire and blocks the clash between their desire and moral standards. But director of the film never tries to judge people’s acts. Rather, he seems to urge that there is no standard that can be applied to anyone or in any case. The mother accuses her husband of bigamy but the son understands his father’s situation; the boy gets his girlfriend pregnant but he doesn’t want to marry her. Each character has their own secret derived from their desire but the camera only concentrates on revealing the ambilaterality of it instead of judging it. (Mina OAK)
