100, the directing debut of Chris Martinez, tells the story of the last days of a cancer patient. A subject like this can make for a very depressing movie; however, the tone of 100 is different from most movies about death. If the somewhat ambiguous title 100 were substituted with a title like ‘100 Things To Do Before Dying’, perhaps this movie could be better understood. It is possible to call this film the Filipino version of The Bucket List. A single yuppie Joyce, who has worked for a financial company, is determined to do everything on her list that she has written on post-its. The movie follows her doing all 100 things. In her list, there are various things including difficult projects like ‘talk to mom’, not so well-advised tasks like ‘drink a lot and eat a lot’, and special events like ‘french kiss a stranger and run away’. She feels no hesitation upon facing death. Through the list of the cancer patient, this movie encourages us to do something every moment, reminding people of the joy of life. ‘Enjoy your life’ The film compels us to echo the director’s message.
