Program Note
Jalainur is a lyrical film depicting a deep sense of regret towards everything that disappears as times change. Zhu Youxiang, who is an engine driver of a steam locomotive in Jalainur, a village in the coal mine region of inner Mongolia, retires from his job and sets out in search of his daughter living near the borders of China and Russia. When Zhu Youxiang’s assistant Li Zhizhong hears of this, he follows Zhu Youxiang. From this point on, the film becomes a road movie. Once Jalainur stops functioning as a coal mine, the miners will disperse and the locomotive will soon be useless. In his twilight years, Zhu Youxiang, who has worked for 30 years at his job, will soon have to say farewell to his assistant Li Zhizhong as well. But why did Li Zhizhong insist on following Zhu Youxiang? The director does not give a detailed account of the reason and neither character shows a particular change in their emotion, however, the screen filled with rugged wilderness and the cold sky is enough to express their pain. Hence, the most powerful thing that narrates this film is the ‘camera’. (KIM Ji-Seok)
