Program Note
After the tragedy of the tsunami, which hit southeast and west Asia in 2004, there have been a lot of films (especially documentaries) that have dealt with the physical damage the tsunami left behind. Four years later, films are now being made to discuss the trauma that the people have to live with throughout their lives. This film, Ocean of an Old Man, is one of them. After the tsunami, all of the little students of a school on Andaman Island have gone. An old teacher still goes to the empty classroom, and looks for his students in nearby islands. He cannot leave there. The voices and laughter of children keep haunting him. He holds classes while talking to the moon, the sea, and the trees. The scenery of islands and the sea presents a stunning beauty, and there are few lines as if the teacher has lost his voice. This ironically emphasizes the enormity of this tragedy. (KIM Ji-Seok)
