Program Note
After selling the properties from their paretns, Hyung-kuk and Young-ae move into an apartment in a city. Strange things happen around the family as they begin their new life. Their daughter Mi-ae starts to exhibit weird behavior, kicking her pregnant mother’s stomach and being way too friendly with an old lady who lives next door. And their other neighbors are quite shady as well. Mrs. Jang, a deaconess, tries to persuade Hyung-kuk and Young-ae to become members of her church and shows particular interest in Mi-ae. Children are harsh and indifferent to their parents and their fanaticism comes in between the family. How the camera shows the indifference between neighbors is quite fascinating and makes the audience become fixed to the closed up scenes. Essentially, The Pot is a film about others. Just like many low-budget films, the characters are displayed in limited spaces. The film takes the audience for a ride unfolding a story of human greed and how it carries their neighbors and themselves to destruction. (LEE Sang-yong)
