Program Note
This film is an adaptation of a novel by Yanbian authors, Liang Chun-sik and Kim Nam-hyun. It describes the romantic stories of seventeen-year-old boys and girls, which can be applied to the general young generation of Yanbian these days. Yanbian life is very different from urbanized life, but the characters in the film are not portrayed solely as those living in the traditional/uncivilized countryside. They also belong to the contemporary world, as they enjoy internet chatting. This subtlety adds spice to the film Let the Blue River Run. The young generation in the film maintains a healthy life style while other adolescent movies mainly describe depression and desperation. Kang Mi-ja draws a fresh new picture of youth which is different viewpoint from contemporary Korean movies. (LEE Sang-yong)
