Program Note
This film is a horror chronicle adapted from Russian author Gogol’s VIY. A witch has never surfaced in Korean culture; it was only an existence in imaginations through western novels. The director Park Jin Sung recalls this memory and displays his odd feelings about witches in the film. Act One describes the strange feelings of director P and producer Park during the process of casting and shooting. Act Two is just like a play in a theater. There is intense dialogue between characters living in Russia. Act Three dramatizes Japanese horror stories. Once a scripter of Epitaph, Park illustrates the fantasy about witches in different times and places in his debut film, and talks about the irresistible charm and power of witches and women, about the historical images of witches, and the level of unconsciousness.
