Program Note
Emerging from a rural village in the north of India, Mary Kom is India’s first female boxer and a sports star who won a bronze medal in an Olympic boxing match. The young Mary grows competing against boys, and happens to enter the boxing world and dream of becoming a professional competitor. However, she faces strong opposition from her father and other family members. She falls in love with a man who supports her and achieves a successful career based on her natural athletic talent and strong spirit. She later gives up boxing for marriage and childbirth, but she eventually realizes that she still has a passion for the “blood sport”. Thanks to her husband’s support, Mary decides to return to the ring. Starring Priyanka Chopra, one of India’s most famous actresses, this film grabbed attention from the early stage of its production. It is notable how the lead actress turns herself into a female boxer. With the elements of sports and the personal story of a real person, this film provides an attractive story that everyone can enjoy. (KIM Young-woo)
