Program Note
Geronimo, who grew up with gypsies, helps children from excluded neighborhoods. One day, she helps Nil, a Turkish woman, to hide herself. Nil, has just escaped from a marriage to run away with her boyfriend, Lucky. This relationship leads to a growing tension between the Turks and the community of gypsies to which Lucky belongs. The two groups then fight with each other by means of dance and music. In the first sequence, a woman in a wedding dress keeps running and finally rides on a speeding motorcycle. This beautiful scene expresses the zeal and energy of love. This film represents Tony Gatlif’s emotive style. Indeed, the film’s theme is passionate love. After its beginning, the film is dominated by dance and music. In an interview, Gatlif said that he had wanted to replace the two communities’
conflict and violence with music, and to generate tension in this process. The newcomer Celine Sallette is remarkable in the role of Geronimo. Plus, I can’t help paying honor to the direction by the master who is always full of energy. (RHEE Soue-won)
