Program Note
‘The House of Isaac’ is a place which takes up kids who have nowhere to go. High schooler Youngjae who spent his childhood at this place sponsored by the Catholic church is reluctant to leave although he is too old to stay. He has no desire to return to his home where his younger brother and father live. As a means to win the director couple over, he tells them he wants to go to a seminary to become a priest despite his lack of faith and sincerity as he deceives people by pretending to be a good boy while stealing donated goods and selling them for money. He ignores his housemate Beomtae’s cry for help, but explodes in anger when his father also tries to place his younger brother in the facility he is in. The double life of Youngjae the film attempts to expose is both sad and deceitful. The boy doesn’t know where to go, yet his family, society and his school fails to give him any guidelines. What direction will the boy end up choosing? (NAM Dong-chul)
Director

KIM Tae-yong
From Frozen Land(2010), which screened in the Cinefoundation section at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, to Night Bugin One Night Only (2012) and Night Market(2012), Kim Tae-yong’s films have become defined by their vivid characters that, as he describes them, are “on the border,” struggling for hope but stuck in the prison of cruel and agonizing realities. His latest film, Set Me Free(2014), is based on his own personal life.
