Program Note
Director Bong Joon Ho and Cinematographer Hong Kyung-pyo made a black-and-white version of Mother, which premiered in 2009. Hong came up with the idea of making a black-and-white version of it while filming Snowpiercer(2013). Bong strongly agreed saying “the bleak black-and-white will go well with the movie.” Mother was filmed with a 2.35 to 1 anamorphic lens. A 2.35 to 1 screen ratio allows more background elements; therefore it was widely used in classic movies with standing out spectacles such as Lawrence of Arabia(1962). Mother is not as spectacular as Lawrence of Arabia but it used the 2.35 to 1 ration lens to emphasize the characters’ anxiety, isolation and hysteria. Considering the spectacle, this screen ratio should have been used for The Host(2006) but a 1.85 to 1 ratio lens was used, adding more suspense. A wider ratio was used for Mother to express the mother’s psychology, and the black-and-white maximizes this effect. (NAM Dong-chul)
