Cambodia, 1971. Falsely accused of being a CIA spy, Francois Bizot, an ethnologist, stays in the Khmer Rouge’s labor camp for four months. As his survival depends on the generosity of the young camp commander Douch, Bizot desperately tries to convince the Cambodian of his innocence. Indeed Douch helps Bizot go free. Years later in the early 2000s, the two men meet again. This great film is based on the autobiographical book The Gate telling the true story of Francois Bizot. Set in the 1970s when Cambodia’s communism was at its peak, it depicts the psychological tension and communication between the French man and the camp commander. As the film describes the historical circumstances from a French civilian’s point of view, it reminds us of the meaning of sacrifices while emphasizing humanism. This large-scale film includes historical facts such as the shutdown of the Embassy of France in Phnom Penh and the 2000 special trial in Cambodia. This new work by the French director Regis Wargnier, who directed Indochine(1992) and Man to Man(2005), comes to Busan after visiting Toronto this year. (RHEE Soue-won)
