Program Note
This film tells the story of Arunachalam, an old man alienated from his children. All his life, Arunachalam has worked in a cotton mill, and the only happiness he has is listening to music on a radio that was handed down to him by his father. However, his son, not knowing how much the receiver means to his father, breaks it, and Arunachalam loses his only joy.
A few years pass and Arunachalam starts to hear the old radio again, but only he can hear it. His family thinks he is ill and tries to get him to seek medical treatment, but, to Arunachalam, those sounds radiating from the radio mean the return of his happiness—a delight he knows will eventually end. He tries to impart some of his happiness onto his granddaughter, but realizes it′s hopeless. Memories can often bring the greatest happiness, but holding onto them or seeing them disappear forever is not always an easy thing to do. And seeing Arunachalam, so happy with the sound emanating from his radio, is a heartbreaking sight. (KIM Ji-seok)
