Program Note
This is the second feature film from director Lee Byeongheon, who made his debut with Cheer up Mr. Lee (2012). His new film, The Twenty, also centers on youthful development. It follows three 20-year-old men who have been together since high school. Born to rich parents, Chiho is well off, although he didn’t go to university. Dongwu has an uncanny ability to maintain his livelihood and dreams of becoming a cartoonist. Exemplary student, Gyeongjae is determined to get into a large company. The Twenty follows these three young friends through their twentieth year. But the central narrative is really the story of Chiho, played by Kim Woobin. Chiho is a womanizer with no dreams of the future, until he falls for a woman he meets by chance. He considers himself her manager and follows her to film locations, only then beginning to dream of becoming a film director. Director Lee Byeongheon has said that Chiho’s character is a reflection of his own youth, and his real-life friends are reflected in Dongwu and Gyeongjae too, apparently. (NAM Dong-chul)
