Program Note
At Sanguiwon, where the clothes for Joseon era royalty are made, Dolseok, has worked for 30 years doing this, and endeavors to raise his social status to yangban—part of the ruling class—in six months’ time. Gongjin is sent to the palace to repair the King’s robe, which was accidentally burnt by a lady-in-waiting. Making clothes for gisaeng (female artist), Gongjin is still young but with his exceptional talent, he makes the King’s clothes. A rumor spreads that Gongjin makes trendy new clothes and ignores tradition and regulations. Dolseok senses an impending crisis. He also realizes that Gongjin is a genius with whom he cannot keep up. Meanwhile Gongjin’s great talent also appeals to the queen. The King has never loved her, and so she relies on Gongjin’s expertise to win the King’s heart. She reveals her dazzling beauty in the dress that the young tailor Gongjin made for her. The Royal Tailor made headlines for its unique subject matter, unusual settings and magnificent visuals depicting spectacular and largely unseen Royal vestments. (NAM Dong-chul)
